These needles demonstrate the precision and efficiency of AM technology. One platform can be loaded with 444 identical, complex needles. The sewing needle is used for tailored fiber placement, in which hard fibers such as glass or carbon fibers are processed. As these fibers cause a high wear rate, all fiber guiding elements in a machine must be extremely wear-resistant. Ceramic is a suitable material for the needle due to its high wear resistance. The low weight of ceramic allows the needle to move faster, while its high rigidity prevents bending.
